Spa baths & bathtubs

Hot tubs can have different types of filtration systems. These can take the form of paper filters or various backwash systems with filter balls or sand filters. Today, it is becoming increasingly common for hot tubs to also include UV purification support. To clear the water of particles and dirt, the water needs to circulate through the filtration system for a sufficient number of hours each day.

Generally, our experience is that:

  1. It is recommended to run continuous filtration 24 hours a day.
  2. You should inspect the filter at least once a week, and it’s better to replace a dirty filter with a clean one more frequently rather than infrequently. Always keep a double set of filters to alternate between. Easily clean your cartridge filters and filter balls with Clean my pool filter. When using Disinfect my pool, dirt in the filter is more visible than when using chlorine.
  3. It is also important to clean the filter bowls and hoses at least twice a year to maintain good spa water.

Different systems and sets

For those with cartridge filters or paper filters

Clean your filters often, during peak season, ideally one to two times per week. To make changing them simple, pick up duplicate filter sets so you always have clean, dry filters to swap in. This will also extend the lifespan of your filter while it cleans the water more efficiently. If the filter gets dirty, it will stop cleaning the water, which leads to rapidly increased growth of microorganisms in the pool water. That’s why keeping your filters clean is critical. You can easily clean paper filters using Biocool Clean my poolfilter. Dissolve two tablets in a bucket of water, then let the dirty filter soak overnight. Afterwards, remove the filter, rinse it, and let it air dry before using the filter again. Learn more about how to use the product on the packaging or click here!

If you use paper filters, use the following Biocool products:

For users of filter balls and backwashing

Filter balls look like fuzzy tennis balls that sit in a container inside the filtration system. These filter balls need to be fluffy and free of caked-on dirt to work optimally. The standard recommendation is that they should be replaced after 3-6 months, but if you happen to get algae growth in the water and it becomes very dirty, the filter balls may not last that long. Be sure to check the filter balls regularly so you can confirm they’re doing their job. The benefit of a backwash system is that you can easily drain a couple of 100 liters of water and then refresh your pool water by topping it off with fresh water. A simple, straightforward way to keep your water fresh. Filter balls can be cleaned and reused in most cases. Use Clean my poolfilter for cleaning.

If you have filter balls, use the following products from Biocool:

For you with a sand filter and backwashing

A sand filter consists of sand encapsulated in a closed container. Some units may instead use crushed glass, but the function is the same. The principle of a sand filter is that pool water is pressed through the sand and thus cleaned of particles. The sand is kept clean by backwashing and rinsing the sand free of debris. Just like all filter systems, you need to keep an eye on the sand. During peak season, you may need to backwash 1-2 times per week.

If you have a sand filter, use the following products from Biocool:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Biocool Disinfect my pool water and regular chlorine?

Some key differences between Biocool Disinfect my pool water and traditional chlorine are:

Traditional chlorine consists of compounds that generate what are known as chloramines and organic chlorine compounds. That is what produces the distinct chlorine smell. These are harmful to health and can trigger asthma, among other issues. Biocool Disinfect my pool is free of such compounds and therefore does not generate chloramines or organic chlorine compounds. Biocool Disinfect my pool has no odor of its own.

Because Biocool Disinfect my pool is effective across a range of pH values, no separate testing or adjustment is required. No testing for free and combined chlorine or alkalinity is necessary either.

How does Biocool disinfect my pool?

The long carbon chain that DDAC has, the so-called "tail", can interact with bacterial cell membranes. This causes the bacteria's membranes to start leaking and the cell to die. The same principle applies to viruses, where DDAC is also effective.

Can I use Biocool Disinfect my pool in chlorinated pool water?

If the pool water is clear and you want to keep it that way, you can switch to Disinfect my pool for disinfection. Dose according to the instructions.

One advantage of our product being compatible with chlorine is that you can use shock chlorine or chlorine pucks to quickly eliminate growth in pool water. For example, if pool maintenance has been insufficient for a period of time. Once the puck has finished working, dose Disinfect my pool according to the instructions.

How is it that one doesn't need to measure and adjust pH?

Regular chlorine requires a pH level between 7.2 and 7.4 to function optimally. If the level drops below 7, it can cause eye and skin irritation as well as corrosion or rusting on, for example, metal surfaces. If the pH level is instead too high, the chlorine’s effectiveness is reduced and growth will develop in the water. Biocool Disinfect my pool is effective across all pH levels and retains its disinfecting effect.

Some simple tips to follow to keep your bathroom hygienic and pleasant

Clean the pool and pipes regularly. If you have a swimming pool without a filtration system, clean it very frequently! Bacteria multiply rapidly in stagnant water without disinfection and filtration systems.

Circulation and filtration should always be running 24 hours a day from the start. Make sure the filter is clean enough to trap new debris. It’s better to clean it more often than not often enough.

  • Check that the circulation system is working
  • Always disinfect the pool water, and shock dose the pool if more swimmers than usual have used the facility!
  • It is extremely important to shower and wash thoroughly with soap and water before and after swimming
  • Always wear clean swimwear
  • Wearing shoes to and from the pool area is also recommended
  • Always shower when entering and exiting the pool, especially after using the toilet, as these bacteria thrive exceptionally well in pool water

Ensure that the water you use to fill the pool or swimming hole is clean drinking water that has not been contaminated with other bacteria. For example, avoid using a garden hose lying on the ground that is used for all sorts of tasks, as there is a high likelihood that soil bacteria such as Pseudomonas are present in the hose. These bacteria will then be carried into the pool and multiply very quickly.

Keep in mind:
Pool water should be clear and clean. If it appears "milky", do not swim. You will need to take corrective action and ensure you have followed all recommendations for hygienic pool maintenance. If you have high levels of calcium in your water, you will always have slightly "milky" water, as achieving clarity is difficult due to the calcium present in the water.

Does the bathwater smell bad?

If the pool water smells like forest and moss when you open the lid, you can get rid of the smell by leaving the lid open for a while.

If the smell is strong and doesn't go away, it could be because

  1. The filter is dirty/clogged or
  2. There is algae growth in the pool.

Signs of both causes are that the water looks a little "milky" or green. Swap to a clean filter, disinfect the pool water, and let the clean filter and disinfectant work until the smell disappears and the pool water looks fresh again.

If you have trouble getting clear water, Biocool Clear my pool water, flocculant, can help.

Additional measures for water that smells unket

Review the information found under the Hygienic spas and bathtubs heading. The dosage instructions on the Biocool Disinfect my pool label are a recommended dose and may need to be adjusted upwards if many people are swimming or if you swim for a long time.

  • Ensure that the purification unit, filter system, U-system, etc. is clean and operating optimally
  • Ensure the circulation system is running for a minimum of 24 hours per day
  • DAY 1: Administer 240 ml per 1000 litres of water
  • DAY 2: If the water appears cloudy, repeat the treatment and administer 120 ml per 1000 ml
  • Once the pool is clear and clean, you can swim again
Should the circulation and bubbles be running when I am dosing?

It's enough that the circulation is running.

I have accidentally overdosed. What should I do?

We recommend waiting 12 hours before bathing, just like after a regular dose. If you have taken a severe overdose, you are welcome to contact us for further information.

Can I drain the water onto the ground or water the flowers with this?

It is your municipality that determines how water should be managed and what is allowed to be discharged. Therefore, contact your municipality and check what applies in your case. Most often, it is the technical office that you should turn to.

How often do I need to change the water?

Whirlpool baths and bathtubs with a filter and purification system

How often you need to drain and refill the water varies based on individual circumstances. If you start with good quality water and keep up with regular maintenance, refilling once a year may be sufficient. The vast majority of users will need to drain and refill the water 2 to 3 times per year.

It is important to regularly replace or clean the filter, monitor the circulation, and use the correct amount of disinfectant.

Bathtubs without a filter and purification system

After four days, you will need to drain the bathtub and clean the tub before using it again.

I will be away for a period. How should I dose then?

Administer the appropriate maintenance dose. For example, if you will be away for two weeks, you will administer twice the standard maintenance dose. A standard maintenance dose is 40 ml per 1000 litres of water per week. If you will be away for two weeks, you will therefore administer 80 ml per 1000 litres of water. If you will be away for three weeks, you will administer 120 ml per 1000 litres of water. It is important to remember to administer 40 ml per 1000 litres of water as soon as possible after you return home to maintain optimal maintenance levels.

Why does a brown ring form in the bathtub or bath tub?

When you use Disinfect my pool in your spa, its active ingredient interacts with both microorganisms and other particles in your water. The product binds dirt in the water, forming a floc. This will be visible as a brown ring around the edge. Wipe it away and check that the filter is clean and that the circulation is running. Let the cleaning and disinfection do their job, and the water will clear up. If there are a lot of particles in the water, it can take a couple of days.

Important to keep in mind

  • Keep the circulation running 24 hours a day
  • Clean the filter frequently
Why does foam form in water?

Foam is created by strong jet streams together with air. The foam settles when you turn off the jet streams.

If the foam turns brown, it is because dirt in the water has become trapped in the foam. This is a sign that the product is doing its job.

Foam formation usually subsides after a couple of days.

How do I get rid of foam in the water in my spa bath or bathtub?
  • Turn off the pool jets
  • Let the cleaning and disinfection do their work for one to two days — the foam will usually settle
  • Remove as much foam as possible from the spa
  • If a brown ring has formed, wipe it away
  • Check that the filter is clean and keep the circulation running 24 hours a day
I have an itchy rash after bathing, what is it?

One of the most common bacteria in our immediate environment is Pseudomonas. This bacterium is commonly found in our soil and lawns, among other things. Bacteria easily get washed into the pool when you step in and out. Therefore, it is recommended to wear shoes to and from the pool.

Skin rashes after bathing in a hot tub or swimming pool can often be caused by Pseudomonas folliculitis, especially if multiple people fall ill at the same time. Therefore, it is very important to shower and wash thoroughly with soap and water before and after bathing. The reason for this is that bacteria can be carried into the pool on feet, body, swimwear, or via, for example, a garden hose lying on the ground and used for all sorts of things.

The most typical presentation is that rashes are localized to parts of the body covered by swimwear during bathing. The rashes are usually self-resolving within up to ten days, but if no improvement is seen after this time, you should seek help at a healthcare center.

What should you do if you suspect you have been affected by a pseudomonas outbreak in the bath water?

If you suspect an outbreak, you should start over with clean, fresh water.

  1. Clean the spa tank and hoses with Biocool Shock my spa system according to the instructions
  2. If you have a sand filter, replace the sand. If you have cartridge filters or filter balls, buy new ones
  3. Top up with clean water
  4. Disinfect with Biocool Disinfect my pool
