Spas & hot tubs

Spas can have different types of purification systems. This can be in the form of paper filters or different flushing systems with filter balls or sand filters. Today it is increasingly common for spas to also have the support of UV purification. In order for the water to be purified from particles and dirt, it is also required that the water circulates through the purification system for a sufficient number of hours per day.

In general, our experience is that:

  1. It is good to start with a purification that lasts 24 hours a day.
  2. You should check the filter at least once a week and it is better to change to a clean filter too often than too rarely. Always have a double set of filters to alternate between. Easily clean your cartridge filters and filter balls with Clean my pool filter . When using Disinfect my pool, the dirt in the filter is more visible than when using chlorine.
  3. It is also important to clean tubs and hoses at least twice a year to maintain good bathing water.

Different systems and setups

For those with cartridge filters or paper filters

Clean the filters often, during peak season, preferably once or twice a week. To make it easy to change them, get double sets of filters so that you always have clean and dry filters to change to. This will also make the filter last longer while purifying the water more effectively. If the filter becomes dirty, it stops purifying the water, which leads to a rapid increase in the growth of microorganisms in the swimming water. Therefore, it is crucial to keep the filters clean. You can easily keep paper filters clean by using Biocool Clean my pool filter. Two tablets are dissolved in a bucket of water where the dirty filter is left overnight. Then you pick up the filter, rinse it and let it air dry before using the filter again. Read more about how to use the product on the packaging or click here!

If you have a paper filter, use the following products from Biocool:

Disinfect my pool

Clean my pool filter

For you with filter balls and backwash

Filter balls look like fluffy tennis balls that are in a container inside the purification system. These filter balls should be fluffy and not sticky with dirt to function optimally. Most often, the recommendation is that they should be replaced after 3-6 months, but if you have had growth in the water and it has become really dirty, there is a risk that the filter balls will not last that long. Please check the filter balls often so that you are sure that it is doing its job. The advantage of a backwash system is that you can easily empty out a couple of 100 liters of water and then refresh the swimming water by filling it with new water. An easy way to keep the water fresh, simply. Filter balls can in most cases be cleaned and reused. Use Clean my pool filter for cleaning.

If you have filter balls, use the following products from Biocool:

Disinfect my pool

Clear my pool water

Clean my pool filter

Shock my spa system

For you with sand filters and backwash

A sand filter consists of sand encapsulated in a closed container. Some may instead have crushed glass, but the function is the same. The principle of a sand filter is that the bathing water is pushed through the sand and is thus cleaned of particles. The sand is kept clean by backwashing and rinsing the sand free of dirt. Just like all filter systems, you have to keep an eye on the sand. During the high season, you may need to backwash 1-2 times a week.

If you have a sand filter, use the following products from Biocool:

Disinfect my pool

Clear my pool water

Frequently asked questions and answers

What is the difference between Biocool Disinfect my pool water and regular chlorine?

Some important differences between Biocool Disinfect my pool water and traditional chlorine are:

Traditional chlorine consists of compounds that generate something called chloramines and organic chlorine compounds. This is what gives the distinctive smell of chlorine. These are harmful to health and, among other things, cause asthma. Biocool Disinfect my pool is free from such compounds and therefore does not generate chloramines or organic chlorine compounds. Biocool Disinfect my pool does not smell at all.

Since Biocool Disinfect my pool is effective at different pH values, no separate measurement or adjustment is required. There is also no measurement of free and combined chlorine or alkalinity.

How does Biocool Disinfect my pool work?

The long carbon chain that DDAC has, or the "tail", can interact with the cell membrane of bacteria. This leads to the bacteria's membrane starting to leak and the cell dying. The same principle applies to viruses, where DDAC also has an effect.

Can Biocool Disinfect my pool be used in swimming water with chlorine?

If the water is fresh and you want to keep it, you can switch to Disinfect my pool for disinfection. Dose according to the instructions.

An advantage of our product being compatible with chlorine is that it is possible to use shock chlorine/chlorine pucks to quickly eliminate growth in the swimming pool water. For example, if maintenance has been inadequate for a while. When the puck has appeared clear, dose Disinfect my pool according to the instructions.

How is it possible that you don't need to measure and adjust pH?

Regular chlorine requires a pH value between 7.2 and 7.4 to function optimally. If the value is below 7, it can lead to irritation in the eyes and skin and corrosion/rust on, for example, metal surfaces. If the pH value is too high, the chlorine effect is reduced and growth occurs in the water. Biocool Disinfect my pool is effective at all pH values and retains its disinfecting effect.

Some simple tips to follow to keep your bath hygienic and enjoyable

Clean tubs and hoses regularly. If you have a hot tub without a treatment plant, clean it very often! In stagnant water without disinfection and a treatment system, bacteria grow quickly.

Circulation and filtration should always be running 24 hours a day to begin with. Make sure the filter is clean enough to collect new dirt. It is better to change it too often than too rarely.

  • Check that the circulation is working
  • Always disinfect the bath water and if more users than usual have been in the bath, supplement with a booster dose!
  • It is very important to shower and wash yourself with soap and water before and after bathing.
  • Always wear clean swimwear.
  • It is advisable to wear shoes to and from the bathroom.
  • Always shower after getting in and out of the bath, especially after using the toilet, as such bacteria thrive in bath water.

Make sure that the water you fill your spa or hot tub with is clean drinking water that has not been contaminated with other bacteria. For example, from a garden hose that is lying on the ground and is used for all sorts of things. The hose will most likely contain soil bacteria such as Pseudomonas. These will then follow you into the bath and grow very quickly.

Keep in mind that:
Bathing water should be clear and nice. If it is “milky”, you should not bathe. In that case, you must take measures and ensure that you have followed the recommendations for a hygienic bath. If you have a lot of lime in the water, you will always have a slightly “milky” water, as clarity is difficult to achieve due to the lime in the water.

Does the bath water smell musty?

If the bath water smells of forest and moss when you open the lid, you can get rid of the smell by leaving the lid open for a while.

If the smell is intense and does not go away, it may be due to:

  1. The filter is dirty/full or
  2. There is growth in the bath.

Signs of both causes are that the water feels a little “milky” or green. Change to a clean filter, disinfect the bath water and let the clean filter and disinfection work until the smell disappears and the bath water looks fresh.

If you have problems getting clear water, Biocool Clear my pool water, a flocculant, can help.

Please read more under the heading "Some simple tips to follow to keep your bath hygienic and enjoyable".

Additional measures for water that smells musty

Please read the information under the heading Hygienic spas and hot tubs again. The dosage information on the Biocool Disinfect my pool label is a recommended dose and may need to be adjusted upwards if you bathe frequently or for a very long time.

  • Ensure that treatment plants/filter systems/U-systems, etc. are clean and functioning optimally
  • That the circulation is running at least 24 hours a day
  • DAY 1: Dose 240 ml per 1000 liters of water
  • DAY:2 If the water feels cloudy, repeat and dose 120ml per 1000 ml
  • When the bath is ready and clean, you can bathe again.
Should circulation and bubbles be running when I dose?

It is enough that the circulation is running.

I have overdosed. What should I do?

We recommend that you wait 12 hours before bathing, just like after a regular dosage. If you have significantly overdosed, please contact us for further information.

Can I pour the water onto the ground or water the flowers with it?

Your municipality decides how the water is to be handled and what can be discharged. Therefore, contact your municipality and check what applies in your case. Most often, it is the technical office that you contact.

How often do I need to change the water?

Spa and hot tub with filter and purification system

How often you need to change the water is individual. If you have good water and take care of maintenance, once a year may be enough. Most people need to change 2-3 times a year.

It is important to regularly change/clean the filter, monitor the circulation and use the right amount of disinfectant.

Hot tub without filter and purification system

After four days, empty the bath and clean the tub before using it again.

I will be away for a period of time. How should I dose?

Dose the corresponding maintenance dosage. For example, if you are going to be away for two weeks, dose twice the usual maintenance dosage. A usual maintenance dosage is 40 ml per 1000 liters of water for one week. If you are going to be away for two weeks, dose 80 ml per 1000 liters of water. If you are going to be away for three weeks, dose 120 ml per 1000 liters of water. It is important to remember when you return home that you dose 40 ml per 1000 liters of water as soon as possible to ensure optimal maintenance.

Why does a brown stripe form in the spa or hot tub?

When you use Disinfect my pool in your spa, the active substance interacts with both microorganisms and other particles in your water. The product binds dirt in the water and a precipitate forms. This will appear as a brown stripe on the edge. Wipe it off and check that the filter is clean and that the circulation is running. Let the treatment plant and disinfection do their job, and the water will clear up. If there are a lot of particles in the water, it may take a couple of days.

Important to consider

  • Keep your circulation going 24 hours a day
  • Clean the filter often
Why does foam form in the water?

Foam is created by hard jets of water mixed with air. The foam settles when the jets are turned off.

If the foam turns brown, it is because dirt in the water is stuck to the foam. This is a sign that the product is doing its job.

The foaming usually subsides after a couple of days.

How do I remove foam from the water in my spa/hot tub?
  • Turn off the jets
  • Let the treatment plant and disinfection do their job for one to two days, and the foam will usually settle.
  • Remove as much foam as possible from the spa.
  • If a brown stripe has formed, wipe it off.
  • Check that the filter is clean and that the circulation is running 24 hours a day
I have an itchy rash after swimming, what is it?

One of the most common bacteria in our immediate environment is Pseudomonas. The bacteria is, among other things, commonly found in our soil and our lawns. Bacteria easily follow you into the bath when you step in and out. Therefore, it is recommended to wear shoes to and from the bath.

Skin rashes after swimming in a hot tub or pool can often be caused by Pseudomonas folliculitis, especially if several people get sick at the same time. Therefore, it is very important to shower and wash yourself with soap and water before and after swimming. The reason for this may be that the bacteria is carried into the pool on your feet, body, swimwear or via, for example, the garden hose that is lying on the ground and used for all sorts of things.

The most typical thing is that the rash is localized to parts of the body that are covered by swimwear during bathing. In most cases, the rash heals on its own in up to ten days, but if no improvement is seen after this time, help should be sought from a health center.

What should you do about the bath if you suspect you have been affected by a pseudomonas outbreak in the water?

If an outbreak is suspected, you should start over from the beginning with clean, fresh water.

  1. Clean tubs and hoses with Biocool Shock my spa system according to instructions
  2. If you have a sand filter, replace the sand. If you have cartridge filters or filter balls, buy new ones.
  3. Fill up with clean water
  4. Disinfect with Biocool Disinfect my pool
