Tablets for preppers
The war in Ukraine has made the Swedes want to be ready for times of crisis with a lack of supplies. After water bottles and alcohol kitchens, water purification tablets are now increasingly popular among preppers.
In recent weeks, many worried Swedes have contacted the Swedish company Biocool for advice and tips on clean drinking water, including how to save drinking water in containers over time.
" More and more people are aware that stagnant water in a closed tank becomes unusable after just one week. When Russia entered Ukraine, we began to receive significantly more incoming questions about clean drinking water. In connection with MSB's reminder of the crisis preparedness advice last Thursday, demand increased even more, " says CEO Petra von Rohr.
The Swedish medtech company's operations consist of two parts; partly medical technical products for damaged skin, partly biodegradable products for clean drinking and bathing water.
In 2021, drinking water accounted for approximately 20 percent of the annual turnover. During February and March, Biocool has already sold more water purification tablets than during the whole of last year.
" Generally speaking, we Swedes have low crisis preparedness, which is natural because we have been spared difficult times for a long period. Our neighbors in Finland, for example, have a completely different approach to prepping. But now there is a rapid change of attitude also at home ," says Petra von Rohr.
Are you managing to deliver at the pace you want right now, or is it difficult to produce products?
” We still have sufficient volumes in our warehouse to be able to deliver to our customers. Some retailers may be out of stock. We are currently working double shifts in our production facility in Gävle to deliver to these. "
The company's water purification tablets are based on a Swedish innovation which means that the drinking water maintains its quality for up to three months.
" According to tests, water becomes unusable after just a few days in containers that have not been treated with our tablet, and within a week it can be downright dangerous to health. Many Swedes have no knowledge of this. We are a little naive in Sweden in the face of crisis, but have noticed a rapidly increasing interest in products that are required for a longer period of isolation ," says Petra von Rohr.
What do you want to say to those who claim that water purification tablets are the "toilet paper" of 2020?
" Of course, we think it feels much more relevant to ensure access to safe drinking water in times of crisis than hoarding toilet paper. Drinking water is actually vital to life. "
